Striking B&O (Bang & Olufsen) Beosound 1 CD/Radio Music System
Released in 2000 and replacing the BeoSound Century, the BeoSound 1 did an about-turn, moving from the boxy, cluttered look that was the Century towards one which was more rounded and extremely minimalistic in its styling. Almost looking like a solitary loudspeaker, but functioning as a portable music system, the BeoSound 1 is essentially a movable loudspeaker system, with very impressive sound given its size.
It has five active loudspeakers: two small domes and tweeters positioned at either side of a mono sub-woofer (capable of handling sound frequencies of less than 250 Hz) facing forward and centered in the middle of the cabinet. Each of the drive units had its own amplifier, and this combination means it emits a broad room-filling sound with no shortage of the coveted midrange, and a good deal of bass too given the discreet size of this lovely bit of kit.
As you’d come to expect from B&O, it has a couple of party tricks up its sleeve: with the push of a button the antenna rises up like a periscope. And with the push of another you are greeted with a hidden CD holder styled in solid aluminum appearing from behind the control panel. As the CD starts to spin a hidden LED screen comes alive from within the aluminum fret, centered at the top, showing you the CD track number and volume.
There's even an AUX socket for the possible attachment of accessories (iPod, PC, wireless/bluetooth devices and more). In the last photo I've attached a Bluetooth receiver (for sale separately) so I can stream Spotify from my phone...VERY handy.
The BeoSound 1 can be controlled at distance with most Bang & Olufsen remotes post 1990. (I have one for sale if you're interested...check my other listings). But you can do everything you need from the lovely, sculpted buttons at the top back.
All in all this is incredible design, fantastic sound, at an excellent price.
